What Is the History Behind the National Basketball Association?

-

The NBA is one of the most popular sports leagues in America. It’s played by professional athletes who get paid millions of dollars to play a game. But it wasn’t always like this! The history behind the National Basketball Association (NBA) is quite different than what you may think, and it goes back much further than 1946, when it was first formed. The NBA didn’t even exist until after World War II had ended! So here’s how things started out:

What Is the History Behind the National Basketball Association?

The NBA was started in 1946. It was initially called the Basketball Association of America (BAA), and the two teams in its first season were the Washington Capitols and the Toronto Huskies.

It wasn’t until 1949 that the BAA merged with another league, creating what we know today as the NBA. By this time, 11 teams were participating in regular season play. The league only lasted four more years before it became popular enough to be considered a major sports organization by most Americans.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) was started in 1946. It’s a professional basketball league, with teams throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

In its early years, the NBA had two leagues—the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball League (NBL). The NBL was originally formed by teams in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey; they joined together to form a single league after being kicked out of their original organizations for not agreeing with certain conditions set forth by those organizations.

Teams also started the BAA from these states and one from Boston. But one team was located within about 200 miles of each other on the East Coast!

It was originally called the Basketball Association of America (BAA).

The NBA was originally called the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which was founded by three teams. In 1949, the BAA merged with its competitor league—the National Basketball League (NBL)—to become the National Basketball Association (NBA). The NBA is now the premier professional basketball league in the United States and Canada.

Early in its history, the league was not popular.

As the National Basketball Association was founded, it was not an immediate success. In fact, many people did not consider basketball to be a serious sport at all. At that time, it was difficult for people to see games on television because few broadcasts were available, and the technology needed to exist for the cameras to capture play in high quality. This lack of exposure meant that games could only be watched if you were in attendance at an arena or happened upon one being played on your local court during off hours when no one else was around.

The game still had several significant changes before it looked like what you see today at stadiums across America.

The league was still different from what you see today. The first game was played in Toronto, and the first champion was the Providence Steamrollers (that name does not sound like it will sell tickets). The BAA became the NBA in 1949 when it merged with its rival league, the Basketball Association of America. When this merger occurred, there were only 8 teams in the new NBA.
The origins of basketball are humble, but the game has grown into one of the most popular sports in America. Check out the NBA schedules to witness the best teams compete against each other. Cheer for your favorite player and watch the live streaming on trusted satellite services like Direct TV.
